The veteran Hollywood director will reunite with Lorenzo Di Bonaventura and Hasbro for the eighth live-action installment of ‘Transformers’ and its rock ‘em, sock ‘em robot action.
Steven Spielberg Returns to ‘Transformers’ Franchise as Michael Bay Circles Directing Role for Paramount
Steven Spielberg is making a high-octane return to Paramount’s Transformers franchise, reuniting with longtime producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura as Michael Bay — the master of mayhem himself — is in talks to possibly direct the next live-action tentpole.
Spielberg will oversee all creative aspects of the next film based on the Hasbro toy line and will executive produce the eighth live-action installment as Paramount looks to expand the Transformers universe.
Bay famously launched and defined the franchise, directing its first five films and bringing the Autobots and Decepticons to life in spectacularly conceived clashes of titans. His run includes Transformers (2007), Revenge of the Fallen (2009), Dark of the Moon (2011), Age of Extinction (2014), and The Last Knight (2017). Bumblebee, the 1980s-set prequel, was helmed by Travis Knight in 2018.
Franchise headliner Shia LaBeouf is not expected to return for the eighth chapter. LaBeouf starred as Sam Witwicky — the teenager who bought his first car, never expecting it to come to life — in the original film and its early sequels. No plot details or additional casting have been announced.
According to sources, Spielberg met with Paramount Pictures co-chairs Josh Greenstein and Dana Goldberg in August 2025, ahead of the studio’s now-completed merger with Warner Bros. Discovery. Transformers 8 will be based on a modern-day script by Jason Fuchs, developed with di Bonaventura and personally reviewed and signed off by Spielberg.
Spielberg held key creative roles on the first two films that launched the franchise into a global juggernaut, generating over $5.4 billion in worldwide box office and turning Hasbro’s toy line into a worldwide phenomenon.
