A new Star Wars Battlefront 3 may finally be on the horizon — and from an unexpected studio.

According to renowned games insider Jeff Grubb, Disney is in talks with Bungie to develop a new official Star Wars shooter. Grubb shared the report on his Giant Bomb podcast on YouTube today, October 19.

Fans have been waiting years for a proper return to the Battlefront franchise. The original Battlefront 3, first conceived by Free Radical Design, was infamously canceled by LucasArts back in 2008, with a development build later leaking online in 2016.

While EA’s DICE rebooted the series with Battlefront (2015) and Battlefront II (2017), talks of a third entry never materialized — even as fans recently pointed to Battlefield 6’s graphics and gunplay as proof of what a next-gen Battlefront could be.

Now, according to Grubb, Disney is reportedly in conversations with both Bungie and DICE about bringing Battlefront 3 back after a long hiatus.

While DICE is the obvious choice as the developer of the last two games, Bungie is the standout pick. The studio’s work on Destiny 2 is widely praised across the industry for its best-in-class gunplay and feel, and Bungie already has a Star Wars connection thanks to Destiny 2’s recent Renegades expansion.

Grubb broke down the new rumor and what it could mean for the franchise, and for both studios, on today’s episode of his Giant Bomb podcast.

No official announcement has been made by Disney, Bungie, or DICE yet.
