Zach Cregger’s take on survival horror in his new Resident Evil film has been a hit — ask anyone on the team here and they’ll tell you how much they loved his interpretation. But it’s not just a critical success, it’s a box office juggernaut.
According to Fangoria, Cregger’s Resident Evil pulled in another $23 million across the U.S. and Canada in its second weekend, coming in second only to the theatrical re-release of Avengers: Endgame ahead of Avengers: Doomsday. It managed to beat out both Brad Pitt’s The Heart of the Beast and the Chris Hansen biopic Primetime — no small feat.
While $23 million might not sound massive against Sony Pictures’ reported $75 million production budget, the bigger picture is much more impressive. Per The Numbers, the film opened to $60 million domestically, has already crossed $103 million at the domestic box office, and has reached $197 million worldwide in under two weeks.
That makes Cregger’s Resident Evil already the highest-grossing Resident Evil film ever domestically, ahead of Paul W.S. Anderson’s Resident Evil: Afterlife, with Extinction and Degeneration rounding out the domestic top five.
Worldwide is a different story — for now. The film currently sits at No. 4 globally, still trailing The Final Chapter ($314M), Afterlife, and Retribution. But with just two weeks in theaters, it has plenty of runway left.
