Publishers: Sony Interactive Entertainment, PlayStation Studios

The God of War saga just changed its center of gravity. Revealed during the latest PlayStation State of Play with a 20-minute gameplay trailer, God of War Laufey puts Kratos’ wife, Faye — the Jötunn warrior known as Laufey — front and center.

What the Trailer Shows

The footage opens where God of War (2018) began: Kratos and a young Atreus standing over Faye’s funeral pyre. But death isn’t the end. Faye awakens, disoriented, in a decaying, otherworldly realm. “Death was supposed to be the end, but for Laufey (Faye), warrior and wife to Kratos, a new adventure is just beginning”.

She’s in the Everywhen — described as “the afterlife of the gods” where deities from multiple mythologies collide. Egyptian goddess Sekhmet and Tibetan war god Begtse appear as enemies, confirming the cross-pantheon scope.

Combat: Fast, Fluid, and Golden
Santa Monica Studio promises “intimate, brutal combat” built around Faye’s speed and control. Unlike Kratos, she moves between ground and air with fluid combos. Her signature is the “Golden Hand of the Jötnar” — she can strike enemies to detach their souls, then attack the soul itself or knock it into other foes.

The trailer shows her wielding an ornate golden-hilted sword against horned, golden-helmeted warriors in a burning village. Purple energy rings erupt from her axe, and she launches a molten-rock giant into the air before a massive explosion.

The Cast & Companions
Deborah Ann Woll reprises Faye. She’s joined by a sentient gelatinous cube named Phranque, voiced by Jack Quaid, and a talking sword-ribbon companion named Rue, played by Perlina Lau.

Story Hook
Faye discovers the plans she set in motion to protect Kratos and Atreus are at risk. To save them, she must fight through the Everywhen. Dialogue in the trailer has Kratos intoning, “There is no escape,” while Faye pleads to “find my way back”.

The Takeaway
This isn’t a prequel. It runs parallel to Kratos and Atreus’ journey in God of War (2018). Santa Monica calls it a spinoff that “expands the God of War universe, shedding light on a character whose story has long remained untold”.

No release date yet, but the game is “well into development” and exclusive to PS5. The trailer closes with “GOD OF WAR LAUFEY — WISHLIST NOW”.

Community reaction is already splitting between hype for the combat and lore, and debate over the franchise shifting away from Kratos as the lead.
