When the United States declared independence in 1776, fashion was already an important part of life in North America, although it looked very different from the fashion industry Americans know today. Clothing was expensive, labor-intensive, and generally produced by hand. Wealthier colonists often looked toward Britain and France for fashionable examples, while working-class families relied more heavily on locally produced fabrics and garments.
