Looks like gamers are in for another hit to their wallets! Sony just announced they’re bumping up the prices for their PlayStation 5 consoles again, starting April 2nd. This is the second hike in less than a year, with Sony pointing to “pressures in the global economic landscape” as the reason.

Here’s the breakdown:

  • The PS5 disc edition is jumping from $549.99 to $649.99.
  • The digital edition is also going up by $100, landing at $599.99.
  • The high-end PS5 Pro will see the biggest leap, costing $899.99 (a $150 increase).

Sony mentioned in a blog post that they know these changes impact their community, but they felt it was “a necessary step to ensure we can continue delivering innovative, high-quality gaming experiences.”

This isn’t just a U.S. thing, either. The U.K. and Europe are seeing similar increases, with U.K. prices going up by about £90.

So, why the sudden squeeze? Industry experts like Piers Harding-Rolls from Ampere Analysis say it’s largely “inevitable” due to a massive surge in memory prices. Memory is a crucial component in the PS5, and with AI data centers gobbling up supply, prices have skyrocketed. It seems Sony’s previous component price protections might have just run out.

This could mean bad news for other console makers too. Harding-Rolls suggests that Microsoft and Nintendo might follow suit soon, although Nintendo just launched its new Switch 2 and probably isn’t eager to raise its price while trying to establish the console.

Sony is hoping to offset these rising costs by focusing on monetizing its existing PS5 user base and boosting revenue from software and network services. Plus, the ongoing situation in the Middle East could add even more inflationary pressure on component prices. Tough times for console production, it seems!
