Collaboration between independent Australian fashion agency and boutique Gusto & Élan and New York photographer Terria Clay, Streets of New York was inspired by Australian designers taking to the streets of the Big Apple – as the lyrics go, the “concrete jungle where dreams are made of”. Cool clothes and cool streets set the scene, showcasing the talent of independent Australian designers reaching the heights of the most fashionable city in the world.

Stylist Katya Ellis co-founded Gusto & Élan in 2011 in Melbourne, Australia to follow her passion for design and elevating independent labels onto the international scene. A designer herself, Katya’s style has often been influenced by New York – the epitome of high fashion, the melting pot of culture and the city of boundless opportunity. Here, in Streets of New York, she has created a focus on texture, choosing blacks and neutral colors that would complement the busyness of the New York streets-cape beyond. Subtle femininity is contrasted with bold sensuality through the mastery of leather – combining both structure and embellishment to draw the focus back to the texture of each piece.

The photographer Terria Clay captures the symbolism of New York in this editorial – its rich history in the background a constant reminder to those living out modern day life in the foreground, where the influence of Australian designers is gaining momentum. The tone of the images positions the designers on a level playing field with the best in the world, showcasing their own uniquely Australian style as part of a broader, universal fashion story. It’s the element of cool that creates comfortableness with the surrounds – there is a relaxed undertone that belays confidence and a sense of belonging; that the streets of New York, despite their seemingly unforgiving exterior, really are where dreams are made, and that the confidence comes from within.

Working together on the editorial, the team drew on their international influences. The images are as relevant to the Australian market as they are to the US, Europian, Scandanavian or wherever in the world. New York is the perfect location for such a theme to emanate. It’s the heart of the fashion universe, and the home of independent style. Much like the ethos of Gusto & Élan – to share the stories behind the labels, the work and the effort each designer has gone to in order to create their signature designs. Every designer is unique, every piece they create tells a different story that connects with the individual wearer. Much like the editorial – each distinct look shares a different feeling, underpinning by the coolness of high fashion in the streets of New York.
