This week marks the 1 year anniversary of David Bowie’s death and also what would have been his 70th birthday. This editorial is a love letter to the master of the reinvention, the gender-bending influence that left his forever mark on fashion and music. Androgynously glam and luxuriously edgy, there will never be another one like him.
The idea for the shoot was born when our team stylist – Kathy Benharris mentioned her admiration for the late artist. Right away the search for the models started. We wanted to cast three girls for different ‘roles’ – David Bowie, Iman and a ‘Groupie’. We were lucky to have one of the top agencies in Boston – Maggie Inc., help us with the process and we got to work with true professionals and beauties that were able to embody our vision.
The location was another important aspect of the shoot – we really wanted to find a perfect ‘rock-n-roll’ space to work with our theme. Bill Hurley of The Extended Play Sessions had just the place and was generous enough to let us use his recording studio/performing space at the Fallout Shelter.
For the hair and makeup Noel McKinnon was inspired by the 70s and 80s edgy/glam style which brought to life our characters for the shoot along with the detailed styling based off the same era with the modern twist by Kathy.
For the final mood in photos, Dina Konovalov of Dina K Photography went with dramatic and colorful lighting and props using some smoke and gels to top off the feel of our vision.
We hope the viewers enjoy the visual story we created and get inspired by the fashion pieces used during the shoot to create their own bold looks.
