The moment before. Before the journey, before the celebration, before the change. This a moment of stillness and quiet. A moment where time slows just enough to realize you are on the edge of something, about to dive into its depths. A moment where everything is full of potential and all things seem possible. A moment looking forward to what the future will bring. Like a bud waiting to become a flower, hiding its majestic color and beauty until the right time to bloom. The temperature is slowly melting the snow away, and the air is full of promises of warmth. Birds gather items and build their nests to welcome new life into this world. This is a period right before the happiness and glow of summer: Spring. Spring is a time of renewal and rebirth. The rain and melting snow cleanses everything from the sky above to the ground below and gives life back into the landscape. In this time before summer, textures and colors mix. It’s like spring has one foot in winter and one foot in summer.
It’s an in-between kind of being. The harshness of winter still lingers, yet bursts of color pop up sporadically. Snow basks in it’s final existence while spring flowers push to sprout their buds. Spring is a season of gradual and graceful transformation. Hard, rough, and jagged textures mix with soft, smooth, and silky textures. Neutral toned colors mesh with an array of bright, vibrant colors. Frost becomes water and clouds part ways for the blue sky to appear. Spring is like the moment before the sun rises. The moment where it’s not darkness, but the spectacular colors of the sunrise haven’t come yet. In this editorial, I wanted to showcase this special time before all the joy summer brings and focus on making spring an overall feeling. The feeling of graceful change, transformation, and new beginnings.
Typically, spring fashion is filled with pastels and flower patterns. We wanted to do something realistic. Something that represents what you see when you go out into nature and see spring for what it really is. Spring is the transformation into something beautiful, like a caterpillar into a butterfly. We went with a mixture of textures to resemble those of which you find outdoors in this season. Lace, sheer, and patterned fabrics complement each other while neutral and flower shade colors weave together to form an accurate representation of spring. Gypsy inspired jewelry rests on Bre’s skin as the crisp air flows over and around her. Earth toned makeup and bohemian accents accompany her blissful expressions and poses. Her hair is gracefully curled like the winds that run through nature whispering of warmth. Bre exemplifies a carefree, and content attitude while gracefully wandering through the desert of Nevada. We chose to shoot this editorial near Red Rock State Park because this area is a great representation of “the moment before”. The dry and harsh landscape is spotted with small bursts of spring color. There are a vast variety of textures in this area.
The rocks are coarse and a range of different sizes, some plants are sleek and some plants are jagged, and the ground changes from silky sand to gritty gravel. Red rock is a sacred sanctuary of the Native tribes that frequented this area. To them, spring was a time of celebration of what is to come. The past is the past, and this is the moment before the great change. Soon the sun will constantly shine and the air will be warm and full of hope. Take it as an opportunity to transform into something better and look forward to it with gleaming anticipation. We will head into this season with a quote from Carl Friedrich Gauss, “Life stands before me like an eternal spring with new and brilliant clothes”.
