This editorial was shot on an empty Northern California beach on a typically blustery September day. In a couple of days, Miao Miao was leaving to walk at NY Fashion Week. We had discussed looks and concepts, and I told her how much I loved the work of Peter Lindbergh, not knowing that the day after our shoot his death would be announced. So this is, I suppose, our homage to a great photographer, and all that he taught us about capturing real people, and authentic moments. Other than conversion to B&W, there is no post-processing on these photographs.
People think of California beaches as warm, sunny and calm, but as often they are wild and untamed, windy and cold. It’s not that often bikini weather. But Miao Miao gamely wanted to wear lingerie under her overcoat, so we shot that and the wind on her coat made beautiful forms. We also shot a black dress under a beautiful Irish tweed coat.
The title, Abstract Sands, is taken from the poem Remembering Malibu, written for my father by the Irish poet Seamus Heaney.
